Box Hill is roughly 38 km from Melbourne Airport and Blackburn about 40 km. Both run the same way: Eastern Freeway (M3) west, straight onto CityLink, then the Tullamarine Freeway. Off-peak it is a 35-minute drive, which makes this corridor one of the more predictable airport runs in the eastern suburbs.

How long to allow

For a domestic flight, be at the terminal 90 minutes before departure; for international, three hours. Work backwards from that, add the drive time above, then add fifteen minutes of buffer. It is the cheapest insurance you will buy all trip.

The route, and the one thing that slows it

The Eastern Freeway is fast until it reaches the city end, where it narrows toward Hoddle Street. Between roughly 7:15am and 9am that merge is the bottleneck for the entire corridor. Leaving twenty minutes earlier genuinely removes twenty-five minutes of traffic here — the curve is that steep.
