Doncaster and Templestowe to Melbourne Airport: Taxi Times, Route and Fares

Doncaster sits about 33 km from Melbourne Airport, and outside peak hour a taxi covers it in roughly 30 minutes. That is quicker than several suburbs closer to the city, for one simple reason: the Eastern Freeway feeds directly onto CityLink and the Tullamarine Freeway, so there is almost no suburban driving at either end of the trip.

Route and travel time

The standard route is Doncaster Road or Thompsons Road to the Eastern Freeway (M3), then CityLink north to the Tullamarine Freeway and into the terminal precinct. The only reliably slow section is the Chandler Highway and Hoddle Street area inbound during morning peak, which is why we leave earlier rather than change the route.

What the trip costs

Victorian taxis run on regulated metered rates, so there is no surge pricing on this route no matter what time you travel. The rate band depends only on the hour.

On a clean 33 km run at day rate, a premium sedan works out around $85–$110 before tolls and the airport pickup fee. An SUV or an 11-seat Maxi costs more per trip but far less per person once you are travelling as a group. The overnight rate applies to most early-morning flights, so a 5am pickup will land at the higher end.
